About Gunghroo:

A Ghungroo is made up of metallic balls or beads that look like bearings enclosed within a metallic compartment. The Ghungroo produces sound when those beads or metallic balls are shaken to hit and then move around the metallic compartments.

Ghungroos are commonly worn in most Indian traditional dances. All dances such as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, and Kuchipudi are a few examples of dances in India that extensively employ them.

Ghungroos are worn above the ankle. Depending on the intended pitch, a single Ghungroo may contain about 60 to 240 bells strapped together in a special type of fabric or material. Children learning to dance may start with a Ghungroo containing 60 bells, and as they grow, they might consider one with more bells as well.

The metallic beads or balls are made of different materials such as copper, brass, and steel. When the beads are made of brass, they produce a moderate sound, while those made of steel produce high-pitched sounds. That is the reason why different dancers normally wear different Ghungroos that produce different pitches.
